Our Practice

The Mackool Eye Institute and Laser Center was the first outpatient surgery center in New York and continues to be at the forefront of ophthalmology. We have procedures and techniques available that are performed in few if any other centers, including lens implants to correct vision for distance and near, implants for patients that cannot have laser vision correction, and endoscopy with laser treatment for glaucoma. If a method exists for the correction of vision, we almost certainly have it, or may even have invented it.

The medical practice, specializing in LENS IMPLANTS, LASER VISION CORRECTION AND CATARACT REMOVAL was established by Richard J. Mackool, M.D. in 1973. Offices have been maintained in both Manhattan and Queens since that time, and in 1983 THE MACKOOL EYE INSTITUTE was created at its current location in Astoria, Queens. The Institute was the first ambulatory surgery center in New York, offering virtually all types of eye microsurgery without the need for hospitalization. This was made possible by the development of minimally invasive instrumentation and techniques, many of which were created, designed, and patented by Dr. Mackool. The Institute is now one of the largest eye centers in the United States, with more than 7,000 laser and cataract procedures performed each year.

THE CENTER FOR LASER VISION CORRECTION, the first of its kind in Queens, offers a complete range of vision correction procedures including LASIK, the amazing procedure for those who are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism. We use the latest and finest laser systems and equipment, including new technology that tracks the eye during laser treatment to increase accuracy and precision. Most patients undergoing the LASIK procedure at The Laser Center have improved vision within minutes and achieve 20/20 vision. 

In addition to LASIK, the Institute also offers MULTIFOCAL IMPLANTS, including the amazing ReSTOR Lens, as well as virtually any other sight-improvement method available anywhere in the United States. Dr. Mackool and the Institute are truly world renowned and hundreds of ophthalmologists from around the world travel to the Institute every year in order to observe laser and microsurgical procedures, and attend courses conducted by Dr. Mackool.
