Richard J. Mackool, M.D.

Dr. Richard J. Mackool is the founder of The Mackool Eye Institute and Laser Center, and an internationally recognized expert on microsurgery of the eye. He has maintained his practice in ophthalmology since 1973. Dr. Mackool is a senior attending surgeon in the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, and at the Mackool Eye Institute and Laser Center in Queens, which was the first eye care center in New York to provide virtually all types of eye surgery and laser treatment without the need for hospitalization. An inventor of computerized microsurgical instruments and techniques for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, cataract removal and lens implants, Dr. Mackool has published many scientific papers and textbooks and has been granted more than 50 patents. He has lectured throughout the United States and aboard, and eye surgeons from every continent have traveled to New York to attend courses conducted by him. Dr. Mackool has performed more than 50,000 microsurgical procedures, specializing in LASIK, lens implant, small incision, no-stitch cataract surgery and corneal transplants. Board certified and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Dr. Mackool is a member of the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Academy Ophthalmology, the Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgical Society and Vitreous Society. Dr. Mackool has been repeatedly named in New York Magazine’s “Best Doctors in NY,” American Health Magazines “Best Doctors in the US.,” and also by Ophthalmology Times as one of the 10 best ophthalmic surgeons in the U.S.
