The ReSTOR and other Lenses

Since the 1980's. conventional cataract surgery has included the removal of the cloudy human lens (cataract) and implantation of a synthetic intraocular lens.  The purpose of the intraocular lens is to provide both structural stability within the eye and the best possible vision at a certain distance.

Because most lifestyles require clear distance vision, be it for driving, golf, the theatre or just walking around, implants for distance vision have been the most widely selected option by both patients and surgeons.  For this reason most lenses currently implanted are intended to allow patients to see well in the distance while requiring glasses to read.  In other words, although obtaining clear distance vision after cataract surgery requires one to wear glasses for reading, the value of clear distance vision outweighs the drawbacks of reading glasses for most patients.  If an implant were to provide clear near vision without glasses, the patient would require glasses for distance at all times.

Achieving good distance vision and having only to rely on glasses to read might sound enticing, however other advanced options now exist.  These include eliminating dependence on glasses through the implantation of special multifocal intraocular lenses.  These lenses correct the eye for both distance and near, and one type (the ReSTOR lens) had been proven in an FDA study to provide over 80% of patients with independence from glasses.  More than 95% of patients implanted with the ReSTOR lens by Dr. Mackool have obtained total spectacle independence.  The ReSTOR lens has been so successful when used in conjunction with cataract removal that some patients opt to remove  their human lens before it even develops into a cataract in order to gain spectacle independent vision.

After a thorough examination, your candidacy for all of the various options will be discussed.  It is our goal to provide you with all of the information necessary for you to select the best option for you that best compliments your lifestyle.
